Imagine waking up one morning in the beautiful country
of Costa Rica. It’s a tropical paradise, located in Central America. With a
total area of 51.100 km2, it is bound on the south by Panama,
Nicaragua up north, the Caribbean see on the East and the Pacific Ocean on the
West. The country has a population of over 4.100.000 people, from which the majority
is of Roman Catholic Religion. The literacy rate in Costa Rica is one of the
highest in the world, almost 96%.
Costa Rica is one of the largest natural reserves in
the world, with 5% of the biodiversity of the planet found in its territory.
Around 23% of the country has been declared as protected areas, which play an
important role in the preservation of a wide variety of plants and animal
species.
Because of its democratic tradition, Costa Rica is one
of the most stable countries in Latin America. In 1948 it became the first
country in the world to abolish the army. The official language is Spanish, but
english is spoken as well on the Atlantic side. The largest city and the
capital of Costa Rica is San José.
Costa Rica is mostly an agricultural country, although
industry is being developed at a moderate pace. Due to its political stability
and the high level of education of its inhabitants, the country attracts a
great amount of foreign investment. Tourism is the second main source of income
for Costa Rica.
